Stalling on your fat loss journey is frustrating, especially when you have been putting in the work at the gym or counting your macros. If the scale has stopped moving and your measurements aren't changing, you haven't necessarily failed, you have hit a plateau. This is a common phase for many of our clients at JG Fit, whether they are busy executives managing high-stress schedules or retirees focusing on longevity.
Why Your Progress Has Stalled
Fat loss is rarely linear. Your body is incredibly adaptive; as you lose weight, your metabolic rate naturally slows down because a smaller body requires less energy to function. Additionally, after weeks of consistent training, your body becomes more efficient at exercise, meaning you burn fewer calories doing the exact same workout you did a month ago.
If you find yourself stuck, don't rush to slash your calories further or double your gym sessions. Over-training and under-eating are often the primary drivers of metabolic adaptation. Instead, let's look at a more sustainable approach.
- Audit Your NEAT
Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy you burn moving throughout the day, walking to the MRT, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or even standing while working. When we are tired from a training block, our bodies unconsciously fidget less and stay seated more. Try to get back to your baseline of 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, regardless of your gym routine.
- Check Your "Hidden" Calories
Singaporean food is delicious, but it can be sneaky. That extra splash of gravy in your chicken rice or the shared sides at a Friday night zi char meal can easily add up to 300-500 hidden calories. If you are tracking, ensure you are logging cooking oils and condiments accurately. If you need help recalibrating your nutrition strategy, our personal training coaches can help you audit your habits without giving up the local food you love.
- Recovery is Training
Are you sleeping at least 7 hours? High cortisol levels from work stress combined with poor sleep will cause your body to hold onto water and potentially sacrifice muscle tissue. If your recovery is off, your fat loss will be the first thing to suffer.
When to Seek Professional Guidance
If you have been diligently following your program and still find yourself in the red, it might be time for a fresh set of eyes. A plateau isn't a sign to quit; it’s a sign that your current stimulus is no longer providing the necessary challenge or that your recovery needs a tweak.
