Trade offs

A trade-off is defined as a balance between two desirable but incompatible outcomes. In the context of fitness, this usually manifests as the tension between wanting a specific aesthetic goal, like visible abs or fitting into a slim-cut suit, and the genuine enjoyment of Singapore’s diverse food scene.

The Common Dilemma

When faced with this friction, most people default to an all-or-nothing mindset:

Give up on the goal: Decide that fitness is too restrictive and stop trying.

Give up the food: Embark on a punishing, unsustainable diet that leaves you miserable.

The Compromise: Find a middle ground where you exercise consistently, enjoy your favorite zi char or hawker meals, but exercise a little more intention and self-control.

If you want to understand the underlying mechanics of this, Precision Nutrition offers an excellent breakdown of the true cost of getting lean. Most people fail because they underestimate the "cost" of the extreme, while ignoring the viability of the middle path.

Short-Term Sprints vs. Long-Term Sustainability

We often meet clients in our personal training sessions who have a hard deadline, a wedding, a beach holiday, or a milestone birthday. In these cases, we employ specific strategies to help them hit their targets quickly.

However, it is vital to be honest: high-intensity, short-term tactics are rarely sustainable. They often lead to a "rebound" effect once the event passes because the habits developed were built on temporary deprivation rather than lifestyle shifts. Making real change is difficult; the key is knowing exactly what you are trading for.

Choose Your Path

If your goal is long-term health and sustainability, you must accept that the timeline will look different. It might take months or even years to reach your desired body composition, and that is perfectly okay. Progress is not linear, and it certainly shouldn't be soul-crushing.

Whether you are an individual working on your own fitness or a company looking to build better habits through a corporate wellness initiative, the principle remains: define your trade-offs clearly, make sure your actions align with your priorities, and ensure you remain happy with the process.
